Do Russians consume a lot or a little avocado?

Average per capita consumption of avocados in Russia is about 0.37 kg per person, which is approximately 10-15% higher than the consumption level in neighboring Ukraine. However, the average resident of the Russian Federation consumes approximately 10 times less avocados than the same resident of the USA, Australia or New Zealand, which are the world leaders in this indicator among countries importing avocados. In countries where avocados are grown for export, consumption rates are even several times higher than in the United States. For example, the average Mexican consumes more than 8 kg of avocados per year.

Europeans consume approximately three times less avocados than Americans, but 3-4 times more than residents of Russia. And in the EU, avocado consumption is growing rapidly amid growing interest in healthy eating. This growth is constrained only by negative information regarding excess water consumption when growing avocados and environmental and social problems that lead to the rapid development of avocado plantations in exporting countries.

Where does Russia import avocados from?

Interestingly, the largest supplier of avocados to the Russian market is Israel, which is only slightly ahead of Peru in terms of supply volume. These two countries account for 60% of all Russian avocado imports. Colombia, Kenya, South Africa and Mexico also supplied more than a thousand tons of avocados to Russia
